A dental inlay or onlay (microdenture) is a ceramic or zirconia restoration fabricated in the laboratory to rebuild a damaged tooth. It fits the cavity precisely, does not shrink and is several times stronger than a conventional filling.
Unlike a filling, an inlay does not stain or deform over time. It is indicated when the tooth is more than 50% destroyed — when a filling is no longer reliable but a crown is not yet needed. It lasts 15–20 years.
