What is paediatric dentistry

Paediatric dentistry is a specialised field that accounts for the child's psychology, the structure of primary and permanent teeth, and the development of the bite. The guiding principle: every visit should be a positive experience — otherwise the fear of the dentist stays for life.

At iDenta clinic in Łódź, we treat children using the Tell-Show-Do method: the dentist explains, demonstrates the instrument, and only then uses it. No rushing, no scary words — just a playful approach and praise.

Regular children's dental visits in Łódź from age 1 build healthy habits and allow cavities to be caught at an early stage — before pain or drilling is needed.

When to take your child to the dentist

  • First tooth or age 1

  • Pain or distress

  • Visible cavity

  • Misaligned teeth

  • Bad habits (thumb sucking)

  • Before school (prevention)

  • Fluoride varnish application

  • Fissure sealants

What we do at a children's appointment

  • Examination and introduction

We get to know the child and explain the procedure playfully

  • Cleaning and hygiene

Professional cleaning and teaching correct technique

  • Fluoridation

Fluoride varnish to strengthen primary tooth enamel

  • Fissure sealants

    Sealants protect molars from decay

  • Cavity treatment

    When needed — painless filling

  • Bite assessment

We refer to an orthodontist if necessary

How a children's visit works at iDenta

  1. Introduction

We let the child settle in the chair and look at the instruments

  2. Examination

Gentle check of teeth and bite — no pressure

  3. Procedure

Cleaning, fluoride or treatment — depending on findings

  4. Coaching

We teach the child how to brush correctly

  5. Praise

We always praise effort and bravery

  6. Next visit

    Scheduled in 6 months

How to prepare your child for the visit

  • Frame it positively: 'we'll show the doctor our teeth'

Avoid words like 'hurt', 'injection', 'drill'

  • Book a morning appointment

Children behave better and tire less in the morning

  • Bring a favourite toy

    A familiar object reduces anxiety

  • Don't promise 'it won't hurt'

Better: 'the doctor will look and tell us what to do'

After the visit — reinforcing the result

Praise your child for their bravery — this matters more than any treatment. Positive reinforcement after every visit builds a healthy attitude to the dentist for years to come.

Remind your child to brush twice a day (2 minutes, electric toothbrush from age 3). Limit sugary drinks between meals — this is the main driver of tooth decay in children.

The next scheduled visit is in 6 months. Early detection is the best prevention.

Special situations

Reschedule the visit if your child:

  • Is ill with a fever — a weakened body and stress from treatment will have the opposite effect
  • Is very agitated or sleep-deprived — book a morning appointment on another day

For extreme dental anxiety, we offer an adaptation visit with no treatment: the child explores the surgery, sits in the chair and looks at the instruments — without any contact. This removes anxiety and makes the next treatment visit comfortable.

For children with special needs (autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy) we follow an individual protocol — please ask at reception.

Frequently asked questions about paediatric dentistry

When the first tooth appears — around 6–12 months, and no later than age 1. An early visit helps detect bite issues and gets the child used to the surgery.
