Acrylic, acetal, flexible or cast partial? How dentures differ and their prices.

Share:

Lose a few teeth and you start chewing on one side, while the neighbouring teeth slowly tip towards the gap. A denture fixes this faster and for less money than most alternatives. The types of dentures differ more than people expect: in material, in how they stay in place and in price.

At iDenta in Łódź we make five kinds of removable denture. Acrylic is the cheapest and combination the most expensive. Most of the price gap comes down to the material and what holds the denture in your mouth.

Partial or full denture?

If you still have some of your own teeth, you get a partial denture that rests on them and on the gum. A full denture replaces every tooth in the upper or lower jaw. It stays in place by suction against the gums, and in the upper jaw against the palate too.

For a single missing tooth a removable denture is rarely the first choice; a crown or a bridge usually works better. All the options are in our prosthetic dentistry section.

When a denture makes sense

Your dentist decides after an examination. These are the situations we see most often.

  • Several teeth missing in one jaw

Implant crowns for every gap get very expensive. One denture fills them all at once.

  • No teeth left at all

That calls for a full denture, which brings back chewing and clear speech.

  • Implants are not an option

General health problems or too little bone can rule them out. A denture needs no surgery.

  • While you heal

After an extraction, or while you wait for an implant, a micro-denture fills the gap.

  • Eating and speaking get harder

The remaining teeth and the jaw joints take on extra load, and some sounds come out less clearly.

Acrylic denture

The most common and the cheapest. It works for partial and full tooth loss. Acrylic is rigid and thicker, so the denture feels bulky at first and getting used to it usually takes a few weeks. Partial versions are held by metal clasps.

Acetal denture

Acetal is a strong resin with no metal in it at all. The clasps are tooth- or gum-coloured and hard to spot in conversation. A good option if you are allergic to metal.

Flexible denture

Made from Acron. It is thin and light and gives slightly, so it sits more gently on the gums than rigid acrylic. The clasps blend into the gum, and the clear version is even harder to see. Used mainly for partial tooth loss.

Cast partial denture

The teeth sit on a thin metal framework. Chewing forces are shared with your own teeth, so the denture is stable and lasts well. It is smaller than an acrylic one and covers less of the palate. We also make SLM frameworks (selective laser melting), which are lighter and fit better.

Combination denture

A metal framework with Acron saddles and clasps. You get the strength of a cast partial without metal hooks on show.

iDenta dentist's tip: Patients often arrive having already picked a denture because a friend or relative is happy with theirs. The same design can rub or rock in a different mouth, since the fit depends on the teeth you have left and the shape of your gums. At the consultation, ask which teeth the denture will rest on and whether they need treatment first.

What affects the price of a denture

We go through this at the consultation, before any treatment.

  • Material: acrylic, acetal, Acron or metal

  • How many teeth are missing

  • Metal or tooth-coloured clasps

  • Treatment before the denture

  • Impressions or a 3D scan

How to choose a denture

No denture is best for everyone. This is roughly how we think it through:

  • Partial tooth loss, durability first: a cast partial or combination denture.
  • No metal, no visible clasps: flexible or acetal.
  • No teeth left: a full acrylic denture.
  • A gap while you heal: a micro-denture for up to 3 teeth.
  • Tight budget: acrylic, which has a long track record.

The examination has the final say. The condition of your teeth, gums and bone, or your bite, can rule out an option that looked best on paper.

iDenta dentist's tip: The most common mistake in the first weeks is putting the denture in a drawer as soon as it rubs. If it hurts, take it out for a while, but wear it again for a few hours before your follow-up visit. The sore spot then shows on the gum, and we can adjust the denture far more accurately.

How a denture is made at iDenta

Usually a few visits over 2–4 weeks, longer if teeth need treating first.

  1. Consultation and plan

The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite and talks you through the options and their cost.

  2. Preparing your mouth

If needed, we treat teeth and remove tartar. Teeth that cannot be saved are extracted.

  3. Impressions or 3D scan

The dental technician builds the denture from these.

  4. Try-in

We check the position and shade of the teeth and the bite. Changes are easiest at this stage.

  5. Fitting and adjustments

We fit the denture and show you how to put it in and clean it. Sore spots are eased at follow-up visits.

The first weeks with a new denture

This is how getting used to it usually goes.

  • The first days

The denture feels huge and you make more saliva than usual. That is expected.

  • The first week

Soft food cut into small pieces. Reading aloud helps too; speech comes back faster than you think.

  • Follow-up visit

After a few days the dentist trims any areas that press on or rub the gum.

  • After 2–4 weeks

Most patients eat and talk without thinking about the denture.

  • Every 6–12 months

A check of the denture and gums. Gums change over time, so the denture may need relining.
