Baby teeth fall out anyway, so many parents put off the first visit to a children's dentist. That is a mistake. Baby teeth hold space for the permanent ones and help a child learn to speak clearly. Untreated decay hurts, and infection can damage the permanent tooth growing underneath.

A child whose first time in the chair involves no pain and no rush usually comes back to check-ups more calmly. That is why we treat the first visit at iDenta in Łódź as a chance to get acquainted. All our services for young patients are listed under children's dentistry.

When should the first visit to a children's dentist be?

Around the first birthday, or soon after the first teeth come through. At that appointment the dentist mostly talks to the parent about brushing and diet, then takes a quick look in the child's mouth. After that, a check-up roughly every six months is enough. Decay spotted early is usually quick and simple to treat.

Why baby teeth need treatment

They fall out in a few years, but until then they affect the permanent teeth.

  • They hold space

If a baby tooth is lost too early, the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap. The permanent tooth then has no room to come in straight.

  • Decay moves fast

The enamel is thin, so a cavity reaches the pulp quickly.

  • Pain and infection

Inflammation can spread from the tooth to the gum and bone.

  • The permanent teeth below

Each permanent tooth forms right under a baby tooth. Infection around the baby tooth's root can damage it.

  • Eating

A child with a sore tooth refuses harder foods like apples or carrots.

What happens at an adaptation visit

At an adaptation visit we do not treat anything. Your child looks around the room and can ride the chair up and down. If they feel like it, we count their teeth together in the mirror. The next visit is then no longer a step into the unknown. It costs from 100 zł.

How to prepare your child

  • Talk about the visit briefly and calmly, as a check that the teeth are healthy.
  • Leave out words like “pain” and “injection”. Even in “it won't hurt”, a child mostly hears “hurt”.
  • Book a time when your child is rested and has eaten. Mornings usually work best for little ones.
  • Never use the dentist as a threat, and skip the reward for being brave. It hints that there is something to be afraid of.
  • Bring a favourite toy. And try to stay relaxed yourself, because children pick up on nerves straight away.

iDenta dentist's tip: We often see that long explanations on the way to the clinic make children more anxious, not less. One sentence is enough for a toddler, and we will show them the rest when they arrive. The day before, you can play dentist at home: count teeth with a spoon and look at them in a mirror.

What the first visit at iDenta looks like

No rush, at your child's pace.

  1. Getting to know the room

The chair, the light, the mirror. Everything can be touched and asked about.

  2. A talk with you

We ask about diet and brushing, and answer your questions.

  3. A gentle check

We look at the teeth and gums with a small mirror. No drill, no injections.

  4. Brushing lesson

We show how to brush properly and how much toothpaste to put on the brush.

  5. Plan and next visit

We tell you whether prevention or treatment is needed and book a check-up.

Fissure sealants

Decay most often starts in the grooves on the chewing surfaces. Sealants close them with a thin layer of tight-fitting material. They usually go on the permanent molars soon after they erupt: the first molars at around 6 or 7, the second molars at around 12. It is painless and needs no drilling.

Fluoride varnish

With fluoride varnish, we paint the teeth with a coating that strengthens the enamel. How often to repeat it depends on your child's risk of decay, which the dentist assesses.

iDenta dentist's tip: During the evening brush, lift your child's upper lip and look at the front teeth right by the gum. White, chalky patches there are often the first sign of decay, before any cavity forms. At this stage fluoride and a change of habits are often enough, so do not wait for toothache before booking a visit.

Around the age of 7 it also makes sense to see an orthodontist. More on that in our article on braces and orthodontic appliances.

Daily care for your child's teeth

A few habits that protect baby teeth best.

  • Brush twice a day

  • Fluoride toothpaste

  • Parents finish the job

  • Nothing sweet to drink at night

  • Water between meals

  • Check-up every 6 months

Your child's teeth by age

A rough guide. Every child has their own pace.

  • Around 6 months

The first tooth arrives. Start brushing it straight away.

  • Around 1 year

First visit to a children's dentist.

  • 2–3 years

All 20 baby teeth are in place.

  • 6–7 years

The first permanent molars come through. A good time for sealants.

  • 6 to 12 years

Baby teeth are gradually replaced by permanent ones. Around 7, an orthodontic check is a good idea.
